Croatia v Brazil Highlights: Croatia return to stun Brazil in PK

After a two-day break, the FIFA World Cup 2022 continued on Friday with Croatia toppling Brazil at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar in the first game of the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The game was scoreless for the first 90 minutes as Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković made several saves to knock Brazil off the board. Brazil finally broke through in the first extra-time session when Neymar scored. However, in the final minutes of extra time, Bruno Petkovic scored to level the game and send it to penalties.

Croatia looked comfortable in the penalty shootout. He scored in all four rounds and Livaković denied Rodrygo, while Marquinhos’ penalty hit the post to send Croatia through to the semi-finals.

There’s still a semifinal up for grabs on Friday, when the Netherlands take on Argentina (2 p.m. ET, FOX). The winners will advance to face off in the semi-finals, which begin on Tuesday, December 13.

Mario Pasalic’s center just failed to connect with Ivan Perisic in net, which would have given a struggling Croatian side a 1-0 lead in this tournament.

20′: Accurate pass, but no goal

Brazil’s pass was on point in the attacking area. However, Vinícius Júnior’s shot was blocked to keep the game scoreless.

Livaković nearly made the splits to make the save and keep Brazil out of the picture in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Croatian keeper continued to make sharp saves, again using his legs to make a save on Neymar.

66′: Livaković won’t let Brazil score

The Croatian keeper was the reason the game was still goalless for the first 66 minutes as he made his fifth save by stopping Lucas Paquetá’s shot in front of the net. While Brazil managed five shots on goal, Croatia didn’t manage one in the first 70 minutes.

80′: Brazil still can’t get past Livaković

Paquetá was again stopped by the Croatian keeper as the game went scoreless at the end of the second half.

Full-time: Brazil-Croatia in overtime

Brazil were never able to capitalize on their many chances in the first 90 minutes of the match, registering 15 shots in total, eight of them on goal. Croatia, meanwhile, didn’t have many chances.

Thus, the opening match of the quarter-finals went to overtime.

Croatia leveled the game in the dying minutes of extra time when Bruno Petkovic scored from a cross that brought a brief moment of euphoria.

  • Nikola Vlasic converted the first penalty kick for Croatia, going straight down the middle
  • Livaković denied Rodrygo on Brazil’s first shot on goal, giving Croatia a 1-0 first-round lead
  • Lovro Majer scored to put Croatia ahead 2-0 to open the PK second round
  • Casemiro put Brazil on the board to make it 2-1 in favor of Croatia in the first two rounds of PK
